The P-2 is based on the concepts pioneered by the MP-1 preamplifier. It is designed for music lovers and audiophiles who are realistic about their budget. The P-2 is an all-tube preamplifier featuring balanced-line technology in a fully-differential package, with a high current output that can drive low-impedance balanced-lines. The P-2 will easily drive interconnects over 200 feet long! Thus the P-2 can extract ambient information, with greater image specificity, bass definition and dynamic range then almost any single-ended preamplifier. The P-2 complements the design of our balanced-line amplifiers and works well with any amplifier with balanced inputs.
A word on balanced lines. . .
Balanced line technology is new to high-end audio, although it has been in use in the recording and broadcast industry for decades. Thus high-fidelity recordings were made 30 years ago when exotic interconnects did not exist. Balanced lines work better than single-ended cables, being dramatically more resistant to RF, magnetic and static fields, and are commonly terminated with a low impedance. 600 ohms is the standard for line levels. This practice virtually eliminates cable capacitance, inductance and construction problems, making long cable lengths possible without audible degradation.
The P-2 is one of the few all tube preamplifiers in the world that has the drive needed for proper (600 W) balanced-line operation. It works well with low-output moving coil cartridges and uses a minimum of connections in the front panel wiring and controls. A low number of stages of gain (four from phono input to high level output) assures low distortion, wide bandwidth and dynamic range. The result is a musical package with exceptional neutrality.
